There's a @#%!!!! spring in the shocks

I attempted to take a shock absorber off the rear of my car and check it out in an effort to troubleshoot a rattle I was getting in the right rear. I removed all the bolts. The shock wouldn't come out though. I gripped the shock with both hands and pushed up on it in an effort to push it together. Then, I hit the top of the shock that pokes through the fram with a hammer in an attempt to knock it down some....still wouldn't budge! I then placed a jack stand under the axle, and put some weight on the axle by lowering the jack in an effort to push the shock together and make it easier to get out. SUPRISE, the shock compressed, and then instantly ccame back apart! ARRRGH!!! This is stupid!!! I finally just gripped the thing and was able to put enough force on the internal spring to compress the shock and remove it from the car.
What the heck is a spring doing within the shock?!?!? This is the first car I've had that has separate shocks (not McPherson struts) that includes a spring in within the shock. They are OEM SAAB shocks, and I'm thinking about replacing them due to their age. The one I took off seems to be in reasonable shape though, but after 15 years, and 150K miles, is a bit long in the tooth. What type of good performance shocks do you all recommend. I prefer a firm ride and nice tight handling
