Transmission? Advice?

Any help for this less-than-mechanically inclined Saab owner would be appreciated.
I was driving my Saab 900 T (1990 180K, manual transmission) on the highway when there was a big clunking sound. I lost the ability to accelerate (drive power?) -- but I did not lose power, engine ran just fine. I rolled to the nearest exit. The car didn't seem to engage in any gear even though the stick moved freely--and it behaved as if it were in neutral, rolling back when it was supposed to be in gear. I had it towed.
And a couple days later, I checked out the car. It won’t start, but it turns over and seems to stall before starting. Now it won’t roll. And no longer acts like it is in neutral.
A local guy told me it was the transmission. Does this sound likely? Any explanation for the car purring and engine seeming to be fine right after I lost drive power and now nothing? And would you invest $2k in fixing (an otherwise wonderful car, newly changed timing chain, newish clutch, new O2 and CC, great body with little rust (thanks to life in the south)?
Thanks for your patience.
A. C.
