You are talking about a 21 year old car. I'm assuming the price is very attractive, because the car is pretty much 'fully depreciated'.

If I were looking for cheap transport, I'd go newer, by almost a decade. Quite frankly, for the price, you can probably buy a '90 or '93. Yes, there may be a few hundred dollar difference, but the first time you do a repair, that savings will be wiped out. I would spend a few hundred bucks for a newer car in as good a shape as possible. Avoiding even one extra repair will more than cover the extra purchase price.

The drawbacks I find of the 8V engines are (1) non-self adjusting valves - you might be needing a valve job. (2) CIS injection - almost impossible to troubleshoot, and very sensitive to dirt in the fuel. That stuff builds up over time, and you've had a lot of time (3) slow, slow, slow - for a few hundred extra bucks, you can put yourself in a turbo - why not have some fun while you're at it? I don't buy the story that a non-turbo car is more reliable.

I would focus on finding a car in good shape with a documented maintenance record showing regular maintenance. If the 84 is it, well and good. However, time and miles wait for no-one, and given two cars with equivalently good maintenance records and condition, go for newer.
