My son has an 86 turbo automatic with 215,000 miles. Last week it was towed home. I asked him what happened. He told me he started it up to leave work and it was making a loud clacking noise. The oil light was not on so off he went. He made it about 3 miles before it started losing power and stalled. By all rights that engine should have seized. The oil pump relief valve stuck open (piece of debris) so it had no oil pressure. Unfortunately, the sender had failed at some point so the oil light did not come on. After removing a metal chip from the oil relief valve piston the lifters pumped back up and everything seemed fine. The engine seems to have survived but the turbo cooked. This year was an oil cooled version only so it never had a chance. I drove the car for about 15 miles and all was well until the turbo oil seals failed. Once that happened the car became a fogging machine as oil was being fed directly into the exhaust. Oh well, I do believe it will live to fight another day. That is one tough engine!!
