The "spring back action" from cranking position to running position is inside the electric ignition switch which is mounted in front of the key tumbler.
To reach that switch you need to disassemble more of the shifter box.
Since you said that the key tumbler was gunked up, maybe it is only the shaft/gearset below tumbler that is sticking in the aluminum housing.
That could be the case if you feel some goey resistance when turning the key back and forth from lock to running.
If so, you need to get the tumbler out and get some "goo loosen upper" down there like WD40 or similar.
