I bought my '87 T w/auto that had been sitting in a pole barn for about five years. We got it started and I drove it home from there (about 100 miles)....with no heat and in a snow/ice storm. All the rubber on the maybe-soon-to-be-your-car will need to be replaced. That includes vaccuum lines and coolant hoses. The radiator might be rotted, or will soon be. All the belts. Plan on replacing the water pump and the heater valve. Probably the exhaust system also or at least the muffler. Brakes are a definite look-see.

On the plus side, it's a low-mileage vehicle in "very very good condition". If he had driven it occassionally during the past six years it may be worth the $2k. It's the lack of attention it has received that makes things fail sooner from rot and lowers the price. IF you can do the work yourself, figure out how much time you think it will take you to go through everything and then triple that amount of time then add on how much each part costs. Offer him the difference between his asking price and your estimate of your time/cost to repair. Take it for a test drive first, make sure you go through all the gears.

Don't fret about the automatic unless you want to go fast in a short amount of time. The automatics can be a real joy to drive, even a non-turbo.
