Either one of them can become temperature sensitive and run for a while when cold.
Failure of either piece, would prevent spark and fuel pump operation. Like Gorper mentioned, the frimware in the fuel injection ECU requires that it receive a pulsed RPM signal from the ignition system in order to energize the fuel pump relay. The ECU gets that pulsed signal from the ignition module (which gets the pulsed signal from the crank sensor.) {the kneebone is connected to the thighbone, which is connected to the anklebone, etc, etc ... :-)
On the '89 900S (and on an '88 900S that I recently saw), the ignition module is attached to the spark coil on a small aluminum bracket.
