You can easily inspect the turbo to see if it's rebuildable. Look for any evidence of the vanes nicking the housing or any "swollen" cracks near the wastegate shaft that could be hit by the vanes.
The high heat experienced by the turbo will cause surface cracks in the housing. They become a problem if they swell to the point of interfering with the impeller/rotors.
If there is no evidence of interference, you can get a replacement cartridge from places like Turbo City in CA. Then you don't have to worry about balance and the R/R is pretty easy.
The toughest hurdle I faced was loosening a turbo flange bolt that is obstructed by the housing. You can't get a socket or box end wrench over the bolt and most open end wrenches will "open" up and round the bolt. Snap-On flank drive wrenches are strong enough to loosen the bolt, but pricey.
However, if there is virually no back and forth shaft play on your spare turbo, why bother with a rebuild?
