Any of the later transmissions can be substituted for the earlier ones - back to '80, IIRC. From mid '86 back, you'll also need to get the shifter assembly and shift rod from a later car.
As far as determining the condition of a transmission in a parts car goes, check a few things
- Look at the oil - if its low or incredibly dirty, think of looking at another car.
- Take off the side cover and look for excessively chipped teeth, bits of gears, filings.
- Take off the rear cover and see if you can move the pinion gear up and down, side to side by hand and see whether there's any damage or excessive wear on the ring gear. You can also see what stuff has settled down to the bottom of the differential case.
- Look for a transmission that is clean on the outside.
None of that guarantees that it'll be good because they are still the weak point of C900s, but it increases your chances of a halfway decent one.
I can't really comment too much on price, the pick-n-pulls here are relatively inexpensive.
