For about 6 years I had trouble passing emmissions test in CA because of high Nox. My independent Saab mechanic tried testing and replacing nearly every emissions related part, including the cat one item at a time texting and retesting without success. The ultimate cause that they suspected was that the recent head work and resurfacing caused the cylinder head to be a minutly smaller and thus hotter. Finally they made arrangement to just "pass it". That worked for several years until the state got more stringent with direct computer links, etc. My last go-round I was required to go to a "test-only" station and failed, but qualified for $500 of State repair assistance. This had to be done at a state approved repair facility. I took it in, they analyzed the test numbers, replaced the cat, and it passed. (hmmm....go figure) Total cost to the state...$499.99. That was two years ago. Now I'm due for testing again and I'm hoping that cat really did solve the problem.
