Very good price. Too good. But why? Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Replacing Rotors, Brakes and Claiphers, Matt, Thu, 13 Jan 2005 10:10:30 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I figure $85 a caliper, $40 a rotor, and $35 for pads. And the brakes have to be bled. So as far as I can tell, the mechanic is losing money on this deal. That gets me worrying - figuring in a mere 1 hour of labor (way too little) at $60 an hour (cheap), that leaves $190 for parts, or $95 a side. I don't see how those can be even rebuilt parts at that price. So I'd want to make sure that they are indeed replacing all of those things with new parts. And new parts from a manufacturer of real parts, not tinfoil rotors and plastic pads.
But I have to ask - why are you replacing all those parts? Calipers usually don't fail, and if they do, they tend not to do it both at the same time. Are the rotors worn below minimum thickness?
As a data point, in over 6 Saabs and well over 500K miles of driving same, I've replaced a grand total of 2 calipers, and not on the same car. I've only had to replace rotors once. Pads, now pads need replacement.
