Michael,
Hope all's well!
The fix you refer to may only provide a small level of extension of reverse idler throw and there may still be hopes of saving this transmission.
Check to see whether the idler gear is being moved onto the reverse gear until stopping (butting against) at/on the transmission housing. If this is not the case, you would still have additional travel to consider which could be addressed by a 7-9mm longer arm/fork.
You could cut the idler fork in half (lengthwise) and weld a 7-9mm spacer between these halves. Eriksson Industries (860-388-4418) also offers kits of this nature which are in the $40 range but may be of some help and may fully extend the throw of idler gear to reverse gear.
Best of luck with your project and regards,
GSK at SWEDISH DYNAMICS,INC.
