I had the same problem - little or no heat, especially in stop-n-go traffic. I replaced the T-stat (never a bad idea), but no luck.
First you should check the control rod for the heater dial. Unscrew the front driver speaker panel and look through the windshield for a metal rod. Turn the temp dial and feel the ends of the rod - reconnect it if it came loose.
Next, and this was my problem, check the heater bypass valve (see eEuroparts for picture). It's a 4-way black plastic hose joint located near the driver's side firewall. Disconnect the bottom hose and look for a ball in the middle of the parts. If there is none, the part is shot. Many recommend rehosing the system to a simplier previous setup, but I just replaced the valve. You can get one from one of the sponsers ($35 easy DIY), or search this board for the hose conversion.
After that, you could be looking at a stuck heater control valve (harder DIY), and probably last, a blocked heater core (hardest DIY). Knowledge is key - don't let a mechanic rip you off!!!
