There's a black plastic spacer disk on each side, in near the side of the seat, with a slot cut in it so it's actually C-shaped. That disk is snapped over a narrower part of the fixed pins that the seat back swivels on. Hook onto it somehow and tug it straight off in opposite direction of the cutout, and it will pop off. (Maybe, from the side of the cutout, push straight back with a long skinny screwdriver?) Do both sides, then slide seat all the way to one side and lift the narrow part of swivel pin out of the body bracket, then slide it all the way to the other and lift it out of that side.
I have swapped from cloth to leather seats in an 89 and haven't yet fully reinstalled and started driving it but my plan is to leave the snap-on disks off so I can easily remove the seat back if I want to. The seat will obviously want to stay centered, and isn't going to jump up out of the notches in the bracket on one side even if it slides sideways.
