Change your gearbox lube. Mine completely blocked 1-2 when it was cold out, and I mean for five seconds or so. Other times it would get grind-happy. I changed the gearbox lube (previous owners probably hadn't and I estimate my gearbox has around 200k on it since it's from a transmission-changed parts car) and all of a sudden it worked way, way better on cold mornings.
Just BE GENTLE with your cold-weather shifts, still. Now that you'll have fresher oil in there does not take away damage that may have already been done to it.
The blocking and grinding was two years ago for me. I've had no other symptoms of trouble with the gearbox since then. I changed to synthetic 5W30, but I also live in upstate NY (around eight degrees out there last night) and am making this into my winter car. Last summer she shifted fine though.
When you change the gearbox oil, don't just pull the drain plug (if you've got one, they were being phased out in '91). Instead, buy the gasket set, pull the drain plug and all the inspection covers, clean out any and all gunk out of the gearbox pan and magnet(s) and then refill. Best thing you could do to extend the life of your 900 after changing oil regularly.
