Clutch part / boot by firewall leaking..

Hope someone experienced with clutches can help me out here..
have 1987 900 turbo - just replaced the converter heat shield and have the carpet up and center console totally out.
from the shifter to the firewall there is a metel rod. on the firewall there is a rubber boot and on the rod there is a piece remaining of a rubber boot.
it appears that the part remaining on this rod was probably connected to the one on the firewall..
I have had water leaking in on both the driverside and pass side under the carpet and was trying to figure out where it was coming from.. when I saw the open hole around this rod, and felt it - it was wet..
ok my question is.. can someone tell me what part this is?
I want to try and find out if I can purchanse this rubber boot somewhere or since I'm going to be having a new trans and clutch put in, maybe find out if this is a part that would be installed with the new clutch..
any advice would be greatly appreciated..
I'm not familiar with the clutches in anyway at this point..
