The best regimen for dealing with transmission oil of an unknown age in a new-to-you car is to change it, run it for a few days, change it again, run it for a week or two, and change it one more time. This removes the particulates that tend to eat up the pinion bearing.
When I changed the transmission oil in my '89, the oil had brass swirls that looked like the Testors "gold" model paint that I used to buy when I was a kid.
Now, I change it every other engine oil change. It's an inexpensive way to try to increase the longevity of the manual transmission.
