Make sure yer linkage is okay first Posted by Saana88 [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: 2nd Gear Popping Out, omturbo, Wed, 19 Jan 2005 12:24:38 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
First step, gotta say you tried it at least.... There's a bushing slash collar thingie at the front of the shifter assembly. Make sure that's keeping things in place. When that's apart you'll also want to grab on the whole shifter assembly and make sure it's securely bolted to the floor. The mount to the floor is actually an adjustment! If it's loose come on back to the board and we'll tell you how to adjust that. The nuts holding the adjustment are a funky triangular deal, probably for theft avoidance. Just try to spin them with a screwdriver to see if they're tight, or a punch or pliers or whatever you use. I've got the tool, a socket really, but others will take a six point 11mm socket and cut three sides off of it. But that's later.
Also be sure you can't grab on to the cap on the shifter and twist the shift rod from side to side along its central axis- that's the rod going on you. This failure is more typical on '91 and later, and darnit that's what's eating my '92 making it occasionally block reverse and first and pop out of fifth.
And finally, there will be a connection where the shifter rod coming through the grommet in the firewall meets the shifter rod going into the transmission. Make sure whatever holds that together (bolt, pin and nut, or clamp) is tight. If there's any rubber inside, be sure it hasn't degraded from soaking in oil. I wouldn't take it apart until you know that's the problem, but pay attention to that coupling when someone else shifts gears for you, fore and aft. Check for motion independence of the whole thing, like put it in third and have your friend wiggle or push the shifter forward and rearward and see if that connection is compressing at all.
Older (8 valve usually non-turbo) motors would block fifth gear when the rear motor mounts sagged too. Since they're hydraulic mounts on yer car look for sagging and traces of fluid.
That's my guess. Hopefully the noise and vibration is your inner drivers and not the pinnies in the gearbox.
If it's because of the cold weather, you may want to change the gearbox fluid too.
