One good thing is that it's a late enough model year Posted by RS [Email] (#15) [Profile/Gallery] (more from RS) on Sun, 23 Jan 2005 19:30:05 In Reply to: Re: What are the symptoms?, Buck 94 Saab 900S Convt, Sun, 23 Jan 2005 16:03:29 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
that the A/C compressor has a slot in the lower bracket instead of a bolt. That way, you can just loosen that lower 12-mm bolt, remove the other bolts and pull the compressor straight up to access the alternator mount.
SAAB must have gotten more than a few poison pen letters before they slotted the piece.
It's good to hear that it's not a charging issue - that's why a lot of alternators get unnecessarily replaced.
Let me ask you about the squealling: does it happen first thing in the morning or does it happen at any time?
If it's a first thing in the morning occurrence, be prepared that it might be a bad harmonic balancer (main pulley) instead of an issue with alternator bearings. My experience is that alternator bearings don't cause belt noise like you describe - it's more of a metallic grind from the spinning parts in the alternator contacting the housing.
The main pulley on these cars has 2 pieces, the pulley ring and a core, that are held together by a poured-in rubber piece to absorb engine vibrations. As the car ages and after the front seal weeps oil for quite a few years, the rubber starts to delaminate from the pulley and it squeals when it's cold.
You can check it by painting a white stripe across all of the pulleys and driving the car for a few days. If the white stripe on the front three pulley grooves is offset from the stripe on the rear pulley groove (which is bolted to the core of the main pulley, the pulley needs to be replaced. This is, of couse, a lousy time of year to be crawling under the car unless you live in Florida or southern California. (Maybe Georgia, but it's lousy here right now.)
Do a search on the board for harmonic balancer, there's quite a bit of info on replacing it and the hazards of not replacing it.
