No A/C (not like I need it)

Did some maintenance on the wifes 94 conv, including new upper hoses & AC pulley. When I turn on the A/C, the compressor won't engage. Bear in mind it is cold here - about 20F.
Is there a safety feature that prevents the compressor from coming on in the cold? Or could I have hooked upped the sensor in the upper rad hose backwards (I assume it is an open/close switch, so it wouldn't matter).
Any A/C seperts have some info on that hose sensor and how to electronically "jump" the compressor? Thanks in advance.
