Amplification on Ted's comment-
Fold the rear seats down, and crawl back there with a flashlight, flat blade screwdriver, and some torx drivers. A small putty knife helps. No, I'm not kidding. It's been a long time since I've done it on a 900, but it's pretty mucht the same for all hatch Saabs-
You need to remove the fabric covered panel on the back inside of the hatch. Again, from memory, there are a few 1/4 turn fasteners right up by the window - flat, black plastic discs with a slot. Turn counter-clockwise 1/4 turn, and you should be able to pop them out. They don't screw out. I think the 900 has a grip handle on the inside of the hatch (I run 9000's these days) - if so, remove it with the torx drivers - two bolts. The cover is held in place at the sides and bottom with snap fasteners - just grab the edges of the panel and pull straight away from the hatch. Sometimes getting the putty knife behind to give your fingers a grip helps.
With the panel off, you can release the latch. First, some nomenclature - the latch is the thing at the base of the hatch that grabs a bar on the chassis. the Latch release is the thing you grab, up above the license plate. The release is attached to the latch by a vertical rod. It connects to the release with a little plastic ball-and-socket joint, and lots of times the ball falls off the socket. Usually just popping it back on fixes the problem, but it may fall off again later. I usually wire them together to see if that helps.
And yes, if the latch is set too tight, it can bind.
