hesitation and missing

1986 SPG with 150k. When I get down to about a little over 1/4 tank of fuel, I get intermittent loss of power (sounds irregular as if it's missing on cylinders). The lower the fuel level from that point on, the worse it seems to get (i.e. happens more often, making it difficult to drive at all). When it occurs, if I press on the gas the boost gauge responds but it doesn't result in any acceleration. The low fuel light doesn't come on at these times (though it does work - I've gotten it to come on on a cloverleaf interchange when the fuel all sloshes over to one side during the turn). Idle speed is not affected, and revving while sitting still is also unaffected - it only happens while I'm underway.
I thought that maybe the fuel pump intake was too high and removed it over the weekend, but it turns out that it's a more advanced setup than my 99 has, with a feeder pump and a pressurized container. And it was set at the right depth anyway. So...anyone have ideas as to what I can check?
