Manifold vacuum

I put a turbo gauge cluster in my 91 900S 2.1 over the weekend because I figured it would be pretty easy (it was)
So I have a turbo/apc gauge now..
It reads vacuum and boost, and I certianly have vacuum so I figure the gauge is atleast half useful. Its operation is pretty facinating to me and I have a question of two.
It seems like the vacuum is a pretty good indicator of engine load. If I'm driving around I can get a rough idea of how much more the engine is able to provide.
Sometimes I have almost no vacuum and I don't have the throttle open all that much, obviously at that point...opening the throttle the rest of the way yields very little extra acceleration...then sometimes it seems like I have the throttle nearly planted and and am at relatively low vacuum and a slight increase in throttle (to full) makes a big difference.
Is this related to RPM, the hills, what else?
Whats the relationship here?
When I watch the gauge what am I actualy watching?
I think I'm going to put a turbo on my car just so I can watch the gauge.
I've never driven a turbo classic 900! This is so cool!
heh, anybody in atlanta want to take me for a ride in their turbo 900?
<gripe> why does the 1999 9-5 not have a boost gauge? Thats so dumb!</gripe>
