I seriously doubt he or anyone else has hurt the alternator's diodes by pulling the negative battery cable off. I know it's frequently warned against, in loud terms, and I agree that in theory it could probably do something, but it's an ancient quick test of a charging system that steers you pretty straight, bad battery? or failure to charge? I have done it times almost unnumbered and never yet have damaged the alternator that I know. (And how do I know? The few times an alternator has had bad diodes it has been making a low buzzing, sometimes still charging but charging weakly, and other times, the whole diode carrier, on a Ford, and again, on a Subaru, was falling apart, diodes corroded and center wire pulling out of them. Both got fixed up for really cheap money by a local auto electric shop. And on the old Delco alternators in GM cars, you could buy the little hat-shaped diodes, individually, through NAPA, either polarity, and push them out of the heat sink and solder new ones in.
I hear it more often discouraged as having potential to damage an electronic brain; but I also have long heard dire warnings against stray static charges around circuit boards, and never have seen trouble from that either.
So, replace the voltage regulator.
