I recently had the valve cover off for gasket r&r, and out of curiosity checked to see if the timing chain marks all lined up. With the camshaft TDC alignment marks lined up exactly, the timing mark on the flywheel doesn't line up exactly at 0 degrees with the mark on the flywheel cover--- it's about 1/4 inch short, like -3 degrees or so. But, the car runs fine. I haven't pulled the tensioner to see how extended it is, but I'm assuming the chain is stretched. Would I be experiencing obvious problems if it was too stretched, like rough idle, etc.? How worried should I be? Or should I just ignore it if it's running ok? ('87900T, about 175K, head has never been off, compression etc. is fine).
