Joseph

Thank you. I agree that ATF and engine oil (although ATF is commonly used) are wrong. For a starters all engine oils have detergents. What I said, though, was if the Aeroshell fluid was red then it is not the fluid used in Saabs to Australia (a clear hydraulic fluid). I stand by that - and I do not want to put a dyed fluid where spillage may permenantly stain. SB 7/89 -1156 has a generic spec from Saab to its dealers - namely 10W mineral 'Motor' oil (which I interpret as hydraulic motor not car motor). In applying the generic specs to Castrol the answer was Hyspin 32 which, as motorcycle fork oil, is easily available here in Australia. Although obviously not definitive, in terms of smell, appearance etc I could not tell the Castrol and OEM fluid in my Saab apart. I am sure all the major producers including Shell/Castro, will produce their own brand name hydraulic motor oil to the same spec.

In terms of the procedures - yes - Saab say remove the whole system and bleed on bench etc. What I'm saying this is unneccessary in many cases. This is well supported by practical exeperienmce reported on this BB. If for some reason you have to remove the whole system then bleed on the bench by all means. However, I much prefer not to a) remove/disturb ageing componets unless essential and b) spend more time than necessary. Bleeding the convertible top system can effectively achieved by leaving the pump in the car and by inverting and back the rams dependent on the ram stroke direction being bled. Moreover, I'm told from this BB, although I've not tried it, that the system will operate satisfactorily after bleeding with the rams left in place - that doesn't surprise me given the relative simplicity and low (500 psi) pressures involved.

Tim
