Your '89 non-turbo has the ignition timing controlled by a sensor down at the crankshaft. (Maybe you knew that...) But the distributor has the same old casing & it's adjustable by loosening the clamp & twisting.
Trouble is, twisting the distributor doesn't do ANYTHING to the timing, until you twist far enough for the spark to move completely off the end of the distributor rotor. Then it just dies.
Under load & higher rpms, the spark advance is greatest, so maybe that's one more thing for you to check?
