I have had the "gas smell" in my 92 sedan that seemed to disappear by itself. It re-appeared, and was fixed by replacing the fuel pump assembly. A small hole had been melted through the top of the fuel pump housing, forming a small puddle. I am also noticing the trademark "gas smell" in my daughter's 93 convertible. Fortunately, this smell is only present when the trunk is opened, due to the obvious design differences of the sedan & convertible. I don't know how a tank can go bad, it is only one component, made of a flexible plastic. Saab would know best, but any offer on an old car like this would be an admition of guilt.
I have never had my cars looked at by a Saab technician, so I have'nt heard any opinions. Let's see if good old Anders can shed some light
