AT won't shift when cold -- any remedies?

My girlfriend's '86 900S w/AT won't shift into any gear when the car is cold and the air temp is below 35F or so. You have to wait several minutes after starting the car before any gear will engage when selected. This morning she backed out of the driveway once 'reverse' would engage, but when she selected 'drive' the car acted as though it were in neutral for a minute or so, then she was able to drive away (and the car continued to operate normally).
Anyone have any experience with this or know of a remedy? I'm going to be replacing the AT forward sump gasket soon (and naturally replacing fluid) -- anything I can or should do at that time?
Thanks!
