Battery sounds like it still has some life in it. To quickly check the alternator ground wire, you can hook a jumper cable from the alternaotr frame to the battery or engine block and see if the meter readings while idling are the same. If voltage is higher with the jumper, the alternator ground is the answer.
BTW, if the battery warning light stays on after startup until you punch the throttle, suspect a bad diode or two in the alternator. Alternators with blown diodes can work OK for a long time before they give up completely.
