I definitely agree that the cotton sleeve material seems flimsy, but the ones I just took out of an '87 were in really good shape (though the covers were trashed), and these covers were from a newer year than mine so they should in theory be in better shape.
Also they weren't torn, they were it seems neatly sliced away from the leather seams so there was nothing left. Either way though, I'm peeved to be informed by this shady character went2kent that the sleeves/wires are not a part of the assembly and since I didn't ask about them, it's my problem.
