I've pulled several off junkyard cars and all have been very brittle. You need to be doing it in warm weather I believe. They seem to be held on in part by a sticky wax, perhaps just the shipping wax all imports used to wear on the boat trip over, or maybe a special wax sealer-adhesive to keep water from getting in here and rusting the fender flares.
My trick was to work VERY gradually, starting I recall by putting a putty knife between trim and fender to coax the lip more open. You really ought to pull the mudflap off first to get at one end of the trim strip free and clear to start on.
I'd seriously look into using the same kind of sealing wax on reinstalling them, as fender flare rust is a major curse of these cars, arising in part from this nice-looking little strip.
