Expressing lubricant preferences of any sort (engine oil, gear lube, tranny fluid, etc) amounts to grabbing the third rail of politics on saabnet. You'll likely get 20 different opinions in an exchange that generates lots of heat but not much light. That being said, I'll offer my 2 cents. I recently changed the pass. side inner driver on my '93 900S (122k mi). I was amazed at what I found when I pulled the inner CV joint apart: there was nothing you would recognize as grease, only a blackened shellac that caked bearing surfaces (and the boot wasn't even torn).

I replaced inner driver, housing O ring, differential seal and tripod bearing. I bought most parts from eEuroparts (site sponsor) and the boot replacement kit came with 3 oz of CV grease. However, after considerable time spent reading previous posts here, I opted to pack the bearing with Mobil 1 synthetic grease. As I understand it, the pass. side ID is especially prone to failure due to heat generated by the nearby exhaust manifold downpipe. I guess that the lubricant qualities of M1 synthetic are probably greater than afforded by petrol lubes and I guess that's ok but probably overkill; my main concern was thermal stability, and everything I've read says that synthetics win that battle hands-down.

My experiment is only 1000 miles old, but so far, so good.
