Starters on these cars fail for a number of reasons but the main ones are: A)Wear/rust on the Pinion bearing assembly, B)Worn out brushes.
Likely yrs has the worn (sticky?) bearing problem.. Easy enough to check with the starter in yr Hand the Pinion should slide and turn easily.. by hand and shthe shaft should be clean and oiled.. if not try oiling untill it's nice and free... IF there is sideways play in the pinion shaft as it enters the clutch (round flattish Cylinder thing)it's Shot.. period.
