Harmonic balancer Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: crank shaft balancer pulley ???????, tim broken 900s, Tue, 1 Mar 2005 19:45:36 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The harmonic balancer (crankshaft pulley) is a pretty common failure, especially after a few years.
It's not easy to replace on a 900, because space is limited. But you can do it with the engine right where it is. Many folks cut down a socket to make some more space.

In order to replace the crank seal, you need to remove the pulley. I use Townsend's starter trick to loosen the bolt that holds the pulley on, but there are other methods - if you have a manual tranny, you can put the car in gear to hold the crankshaft fixed, and possibly loosen it with a breaker bar.
While you're in there, think about replacing the main seal - it's about an additional 5 minutes of work and $5 in parts.
