Try the stethoscope suggested by Ari or use a screwdriver handle to ear and tip on engine/noise sources. If the noise is loudest on valve cover near the firewall, then odds are very high that the timing chain pad located in the valve cover has hardened over the years. Simply remove the valve cover and slide in a new pad. Available from site sponsors like sobstory 800-583-0370. Consider a new set of valve cover gaskets while you're at it.
If the noise is louder towards front of car or over a particular cylinder, you may have a sticky lifter. Try a bottle of marvel mystery oil or a pint of Dexron ATF. Usually cleans out the lifters pretty well. Change oil after 500-1000 miles.
