Motor/tranny move from '88 900t to '93 autospastic? Posted by arabiflora [Email] ![]() ![]() |
A couple of recent developments.
First,my 93 900S sedan with buggy automatic transmission is awaiting diagnosis at one of the rare shops in Madison that will even look at problems with the automatic transmission. I got the car in December, 04, and it has had issues with the 2 - 3 shift. I did two changes of 3 qts each type F tranny fluid and that seemed to help. Band adjustment was delayed by my inertia, lack of torque wrench capable of metering inch-pounds of pressure, and lack of pan gasket to put it all back together. The 2 - 3 shift is no longer a problem, though, since the car presently won't go out of first gear. I'm hoping for the best (maybe a band adjustment will suffice, or maybe the governor is clogged) but expecting the worst.
Second, I was lucky to have snagged an '88 900T with ~125k miles this weekend for the price of.... Beer. PO upgraded to BMW, didn't have time in his life or room in driveway to refurbish it, and with the usual accumulated problems (minor front end damage, sagging headliner, vacuum leak, Saab rust pattern) he felt it better to donate the car to a Saaber (I gave him two cases of beer, a sampling of Wisconsin's finest) rather than do the heavy lifting required to market a car that would likely get, at most, $500 in private sale. While there is too much play in the clutch, the car drives like a bat out of hell. Maybe I'm just to used to the stodgey habits of my '88 16v NA with 332k miles, but I am amazed at how much more power my beer car has than the other.
So here's my questions:
(1) Assuming that the indie shop declares the auto trans in my '93 a goner (I try to be hopeful but I'm a pessimist at heart), I'm inclined to replace the 2.1 l 16v NA motor and auto transmission of the '93 with the turbo-equipped 2.0l and (apparently solid) 5 speed tranny from my beer car. Is this doable and as straighforward as it appears (yeah, I know, you gotta transfer pedals, shifting assembly, etc; I need to know if it will fit, APC, intercooler, and all)?
(2) The indie shop will be working at ~$75/hr and I'm confident that they could do the job if it's possible (see question 1). Alternatively, I know a guy who used to wrench for another Euro auto shop and would be willing to work on my Saabs in his garage, allow me to help(?) and charge only $45/hr. Assuming the swap is doable and required, do I tell the indie shop to go with it or do I pay them for their diagnosis and take the work to my friend's garage? I guess the question boils down to what is a reasonable expectation of hrs required to perform the transplant?
