I recently had a similar situation, putting an 86 engine/trans in an 87 and not finding fifth gear. Put the trans in third gear, remove plastic shifter housing cover, and see if you can drop a 1/4 inch diameter drill bit into the hole in BOTH the housing (near the front of the housing) AND the shift shaft. If not, with the trans in third gear, loosen the shift shaft coupler pinch bolts under the car and place a drill bit (IIRC a 1/8" or 3/16") in the hole in the shaft (coming out of the back of trans) and the drill bit will lay in a channel cast into the trans. Then go back into the car, move the shifter until you can drop the 1/4" drill bit into the housing AND shaft. With that done it is a process of tightening the pinch bolt, REMOVING various drill bit "pins", and seeing if you can get fifth gear. It probably took me longer to "hunt and peck" this than it will for you to align your shifter. IF you have a late 87 trans you MAY also need to consider that an 85 has external shifter centering mechanism in the shift housing and an internal centering mechanism in the 87 trans. If so, you may need to remove the external centering mechanism from your 85 shifter housing. NOTE: I am not sure when they went to internal centering mechanisms.
