aka the joy of fuel pump relays.

I left work last night, drove a couple of miles on surface streets til I hit the freeway and opened my 83 900T up a little. About 30 seconds into a fun stretch of acceleration the whole little parade came to an abrupt end. The car hesitated then had no power, pushed in the clutch and the red lights came on. Bummer.

I'd seen enough posts here to know it's not an uncommon occurance and was ready for the worst. Sitting by the side of the road the car would turn over just fine and even run for a second or 2. I thought maybe the overboost cutoff on the fuel pump circuit was to blame, but my APC box is currently unplugged and sitting in my office, awaiting a replacement I won on Ebay recently. Seemed like it could be a plugged fuel filter or a fuel pump problem. Bentley was living in the back so I consulted him. Thought I'd try the jumper wire test of the fuel pump and I just happened to have some spare wire and a few lug connectors in my emergency kit that worked like a charm.

I removed the fuel pump relay and jumped the 2 appropriate terminals. When I got back in the car I could hear the pump chattering away, so I cranked on the ignition and it fired right up! Hooray! It's an easy (but likely not cheap: $125 new at dealer) fix and I saved a hefty towing bill.

I have a pact with my neighbor who drives a 1979 99 Turbo to rescue each other if we break down in the city where we live, and I ALMOST resorted to making that phone call. He was outside when I made it home and we had a good chat about it all.

So the moral of the story is: Keep Bentley and a small emergency kit handy, and be prepared to hotwire the fuel pump relay as one option when your Saab gets a little temperamental.
