Over the years of production. Aside from the additions of ABS, airbags and upgraded ignition electronics, I think it would be really hard to find any other major differences from your '85 to the latest C900, '94T-conv. The only real potential problems are with the ABS if the previous owner(s) did not have fluid changed with some regularity. ABS components are pricey, even used. But, I've had 3 C900's all with ABS and have never had a problem except for a pressure accumulator that needed to be replaced.
The "newer" C900's are still just as easy to work on yourself. I'm even finding my '00 9-3SE more and more user friendly in that respect also.
So...go ahead, find the newest C900 turbo you can and have fun.
