I had a simalier issue once. I had just replaced my IC pipes from the old style to the newer 90+ type. Anyway long story short I had a ring clap go bad. It looked ok but when I went to check for leaks, I'd try and tighen everything up the ring clap would just spin. Not pulling a tight seal. Didn't leak under normal driving, only when I'd get on real hard. The car would buck and spudder. To be honest it kinda scared the crap out of me.

So there I sat in a parking lot trying to figure out what the hell I did to my car. lol

The ring claps just get old after 20 yrs. I think the teeth are stonger then the clap that holds it to the "ring". I'd make sure of this if you haven't already. Mine came "loose" right at the turbo, so it was a little harder to see.
