Yes, and no. Posted by Saana88 [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Will '93 9000 radio fit my '87 900?, John, Tue, 15 Mar 2005 16:43:34 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The radio unit fits in the box, sure. However, you'll need to remove the metal box from the 9000 and fit it into the 900. The connectors ought to be plugged the same, surprisingly enough. You will need the 9000's later-style box to mesh with the connector on the back of the newer-style radio. You may notice that the new radio has an additional amplifier and fuses on the back of its box; where do you think all the extra sound comes from?
Big example: Base radios on 1987 and 88 only had something like a 16 watt amplifier in them. One trip to a junkyard later, and I had a radio from an '89 900 turbo and the equalizer from a '91 9000. I had to buy the equalizer cable from Swab, which cost more than the radio, radio box, equalizer, AND equalizer box at the junkyard, and all the connectors matched up. I now have a 100-watt stereo and equalizer in my base-model car, and it's starting to chew up my 17-year-old speakers. But, it gets the job done.
Important footnote: if you forgo the equalizer, you will need a four-pin jumper cap or the designed-for-equalizer radio will not work right.
I don't recommend most aftermarket radios in a 900; aside from hack-job wiring and often sacrificing ease of use for some grape-jelly colored collection of little buttons, you've demonstrated that there is still a good supply of OEM-spec radios designed for your car.
Good luck!
