Talk to the yard people. There has been at least one instance where they have used their forklift to help somebody pull a SAAB engine and separate it from the transmssion.
They do have an A-frame that you can use. If you don't have one, you can borrow the come-along that I used. It's cheap, kinda bent, but it worked.
For a few tips:
- You'll want to remove the clutch pressure plate. Hopefully the clutch hydraulics are still complete. Get a 2x4 or some other piece of wood long enough to keep the clutch pedal depressed (or at least in a state of minor annoyance) by wedging it against the seat or the crosspiece the front of the seat rests on. Then you can put some kind of spacer in the pressure plate to be able to remove the pressure plate.
If the hydraulics aren't complete, you can remove the pressure plate bolts and pry up one side, put a 1" nut under it on one side, turn it, and put a nut under the other side so you can fit the spacer in.
Undo the hex screws on the slave before you do that.
Remove the primary shaft. Townsendimports.com has a good writeup on that.
- Undo all of the grounding straps, the wiring harnesses, ground wires from the engine to the body, and cables to the starter (there are a few other wires that I can't remember offhand, too.)
- Undo the shift coupler.
- Undo the strap that holds the drivers side motor mount to the body - it's the lower of the two bolts on the front of the motor mount.
- Remove the nuts on the bottom of both engine mount pylons - you can see them by looking up through the drive axle portholes.
- Unhook the power steering hoses.
- Unbolt the front mount and all of the stuff I've forgotten (how's *that* for a disclaimer).
For removing the engine from the transmission, it'll be easier if you remove the flywheel. There is one stud on the back that is tricky to deal with.
