Hi,

My (european) 900 1985 turbo regularly starts up like a steam engine. It seems to get the first dot of gas from the cold start injector, but then the revs quickly drop (below 400) and the engine either stalls or when it fires up, it usually runs poor on two or three cylinders and there's quite some smoke coming out the exhaust. Need to give it a good bit of throttle, nut after driving the car for a while, all shakes and flutters go away and the engine runs smoothly when warmed up. There seems to be a notorious clicking coming from the front of the engine cover. Plugs have come out a little black and drenched in fuel. After blowing out excess fuel, the car would always start up nicely.

Since we first thought it was a fuel problem, I have exchanged all the hardware on the CIS. Injectors, cold start injector, thermo-time switch, aux. air valve and recently the warm-up regulator (all from the scrap yard). In addition, new Bougicords, cap, rotor, fresh plugs and oil, but nothing seems to have any effect. On a 'good day' there can be hardly any problem at all and the cold start system seems to work fine.

Is it something electrical or could I have disturbed something when working under the dash? Do I need to fine-tune my CIS? We've doen a compression test and that came out fine, showed no significant leaks. I've kept an eye on the coolant level and it has dropped from max. to min. over a period of a couple of months. So my last guess would be a hair-crack in a gasket. But if it were a coolant leak, shouldn't plugs show up clean?

I hope I've described all the symptoms and somebody can tell me what's wrong with this car before I decide on a big work-over and a new gasket.

Wilmar
