Finally got around to cobbling up a fuel pressure gauge - my old VW one wouldn't fit. Fuel pressure 85 psi! Think maybe I have found the problem. I suspect the reason it started and ran fine but wouldn't warm start was that the cold engine could handle all the gas, and once the O2 sensor kicked in the injection could compensate, but that it was vulnerable to being grossly over-rich in the inbetween state.
Put a bypass line on the regulator (this is an '89), no change in pressure. I was sure I'd kinked the return line when I had the fuel filter from hell problems but now I suspect it was the other way around and the failing regulator may have caused the filter to start leaking.
Good reminder that fuel pressure should always be first thing checked in diagnosisiing injection probs, since I didn't have a gauge and was too lazy to make a new one I was diddling about with everything else.
Oh, I made the gauge with NO fittings at all just used 1/2" fuel line to connect to the regulator and 3/8" to the fuel line, slid them over the fuel line fittings and tightened down with hose clamps. This is a bit dodgy, be sure to have someone at they ignition to kill the engine if a line pops, and a fire extinguisher handy!
Can't try a new regulator until my wife gets home and I can swipe the one from her car.
