believe it or not. i did my first pinion undo with a two big pipe wrenches and two pipes. they gotta be good ones tho and you have to have a clue. however, taking the nut off is childs play compared to the last race, your press may not work without the saab backer plates, i had a trans shop bustin ass for 40 minutes one time, he used a cutoff wheel and a chisel at the end. i used a dremel and saw as much as i possibly can ( small radius of dremel wheel leaves very little material) and then split it with a chisel. my advice?? ship the pinion as is to scanwest and let them set put a new one onm with preload. on my last on trans i just went to there shop and used their tools to take the pinion apart...like picking my nose it was so easy. but it is "challenging" to make it happen by yourself without the tools....and as you see, it is already not trivial. :)
fedex bothe ways still less bother than doing it without the tools and it comes back set up right. if you have started this then you will find a lot of good help in the archives. search chrisx pinion or preload. everything can be done with simple tools. i finally welded up a square tube with two syncro hubs and bought a cheap big ass crescent wrench. preloads set with a bucket of bolts, a scale and a string etc. AND get a haynes, the one part where they were good was the trans chptr
if you overboost this may not be your last try at this. an 8" digital caliper is a must, as is a 0-1 mic and a set of inside gauges. all clearances can be derived without the special tools. buy chapter 4 of saab manuals. order it from saab, scanwest will knwo what to buy and ship it etc. few bucks more.
you will need a lot of bearings. talk to the parts guy at scanwest. tell them the seattle saab club sent you.
