I've had good luck locally Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: best place to buy tires?, saabi, Thu, 24 Mar 2005 10:04:16 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
In my area (CT) there are a few big chains - Town Fair Tire is one. I do my research, and decide on a tire. I then check Tire Rack, etc, to come up with a price. I find a local shop/garage that will mount and balance tires, and get a price (usually around $10 a tire). With that total price in mind, and a copy of Road and Track under my arm, I go into the local chain and ask them for a price on the tire of my choice. If it is much higher than what I can get it for mail-order, I let them know and ask if they can do better. The response ranges from heming-and-hawing, followed by a lower price, to just coughing up a lower price.
In general, I am comfortable paying a little bit more (about $25-$30 for a set of four) from my local shop. That cover the hassle factor. I can also get some nice services - my local place provides a road hazard guarantee for about $2 a tire, Non-pro-rated. I've rolled tires in with holes and blown-out sidewalls, and they've replaced them on the spot. That kind of service isn't available easily mail-order.
If the local shop can't come close to mail order, I buy mail-order. But so far, I've been able to get my local chain to come close enough to cover the hassle factor. And I've sat in the waiting room next to folks buying the exact same tires, that paid list. Such is life.
