Saabpilot, Your new unit is most likely fine. However, you have unseated the ball and cup mechanism. You could try giving some gentle shakes, and then leveling it, and then trying it. This may take many tries. If you take your old seatbelt apart, you can figure out how they work. You have to drill out the rivots holding on the covers. Replace them with self tapping screws. However, one side holds the recoil spring, and cannot be removed!! It can fly out and cut you as it does! Wear leather work gloves. It is tricky to know what is the right side, because the units are the same on each side, just reversed. When you remove the ball and cup cover, you will see how it works, and a gentle push re-seats it, I drll a small hole in that cover, and reseat it with an allen wrench by feel when a belt sticks and is "broken".The early Saab belts also made by Klippon, had screws holding the covers on, so you could remove both covers without spring worries. These belts are 100% the same as the 1972 ones except the covers. Your "broken" original belt is most likely simply unseated as well. I've fixed about a dozen of these this way...always the same thing. Keep in mind this isn't a Saab repair, you fixing a Klippon unit. It sounds complicated, but it is actually so simple. You just have to ruin one of them to realize how it works. Best of luck.
