Minor misalignment can cause squirrelly handling Posted by RS [Email] (#15) [Profile/Gallery] (more from RS) on Sun, 3 Apr 2005 16:05:57 In Reply to: steering... weaving, dave c, Sun, 3 Apr 2005 15:35:59 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The rack is probably OK. It's really easy to make an error of a couple of mm when you put new tie rod ends on a new rack. (BTDT)
And, some slop in the old rack can easily mask slop in old ball joints and A-arm bushings.
If you have an alternate vehicle that you can use for a few days, you might want to consider replacing the ball joints before you spend money on an alignment.
A couple of months ago, I replaced the rack in my '89. The handling was improved but didn't become rock solid until I replaced the ball joints.
It's also possible that there's some sloppiness in the steering U-joint, but that probably would have been pretty apparent before you put the new rack in.
PS, contratulations on completing a messy, unfriendly project on your car. It a really great feeling when it's all put back together.
