I clumsily once cracked the porcelain neck of a spark plug but it was an educational experience so I wasn't sorry it happened. What I saw was this:
The plug looked like new externally, clean porcelain without burnt-on old oil stains, lettering clear, plating still pretty bright, tip contacts clean, square flat top to center electrode and full height above porcelain, nice full straight-sided side electrode, not looking like a little burnt-down finger all rounded off.
BUT inside the cracked porcelain top: From the bright-plated top terminal, there's a long iron rod that carries the spark down to the center electrode, and it was appallingly rusted inside the porcelain, such that there wasn't much left to it to carry the spark, almost rusted through.
I still re-use plugs but I never assume that because they look good they must be good; I always doubt them in cases of poor firing.
